TCS Expands into WAP Technology

Ties-up with Jataayu Software, a subsidiary of Integra
Micro Systems

Mumbai, 21 Aug 2000 - Tata Consultancy Services, Asia's largest global software and services company, today announced the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Jataayu Software (P) Ltd., the first Indian company to launch the WAP server and WAP browser, and a spin off of Integra Micro Systems (P) Ltd, Bangalore. The MoU will enable TCS to expand their scope of operations into the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) field and Jataayu to take its products and services to the global market place. The investments by TCS will infuse the expertise to take Jataayu Software effectively to the Global Market place and will also bring in the brand values of TCS. Commenting on the MoU, Mr. Ramadorai, CEO of TCS said, "It is the vision of TCS as a global company to be ahead of the ever expanding technology race. We are presently the largest in Asia and along with Jataayu, WAP will be another area that we can dominate in the years to come". Commenting on the alliance Mr. Mahesh Kumar Jain, Managing Director of Jataayu Software said, "We are happy to be associated TCS and this agreement will carry us both ahead in the technology race and to build a leadership position in the Wireless Internet arena". TCS has made significant investments in new technology areas and has identified WAP as a strategic area for its future. Jataayu has created a set of products and offerings in the WAP area, specifically under the brand names 'Jataayu' and 'Unwiring the Internet'. The arrangement covers the Jataayu range of Products and Services in the Wireless Computing area. As part of the agreement, TCS with its global presence will assist Jataayu in the following areas:

  • Development and Test Services
  • Software Engineering Process and Training
  • Infrastructure
  • Certification

In return, and as part of the agreement TCS will derive value by gaining the opportunity for System Integration work with the Products and Services of Jataayu Software. TCS and Jataayu will also cooperate in the areas of device drivers, Protocol stack and wireless technologies. Jataayu is best known as a reputed enabler of WAP based solutions. WAP is an open, global specification, which gives mobile users with wireless devices the opportunity to easily access the Internet for information and services. The protocol has been developed by WAP Forum and is currently supported by over 600 members.
