Users typically have fragmented data sets on their mobile device, laptop/desktop and on the web, that is modified over time. They demand the ability not only to use the information and applications on one device, but to synchronise any updates with the information and applications back at the office, or on the network. Groups of people out on the field, interacting with a common information base, such as a field delivery force, require that changes/schedules on the networked central information base gets updated on their mobile device instantly and securely.

The SyncML standard, adopted by the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA), provides uniform synchronising between devices and the network and even between devices, commonly used PIM (Personal Information Management) data such as Phonebook, Calendar, Tasks, Memos and also Email messages. Besides, the Sync ML protocol could also be used to synchronise 3rd party Applications.

The Jataayu jSync DS Client solution from Jataayu is a robust, proven solution that offers several advantages:

Designed for Portability
The jSync DS client is built on Jataayu's JCF® - a proven framework, ported on over 12 platforms. The JCF framework maintains a clear separation of the graphical user interface code and the actual application code. The actual application code (device independent) and the graphical user interface (device dependent) are available in two separate layers, to enable complete ease of porting.

Flexible & Efficient
Common SyncML Engine for DS & DM Jataayu's jSync DS and jSync DM clients share a common SyncML core. They can be provided together or as independent standalone solutions. Device makers looking at providing a complete solution can take advantage of a more tightly integrated, compact code base.

Seamless User Experience
The jSync DS Client allows smooth integration with native device PIM functionality. Plug able data converters for applications such as phonebook, calendar, to do lists, etc. are integrated to provide a seamless user experience.

The jSync DS Solution
The jSync DS is a full featured SyncML DS solution.

The main components are briefly described below:

Application Layer
The Application layer provides the MMI for all user interactions. It provides for an extensible list of adapters for different applications. All interfaces with native/third party data applications are handled through these specific adapters.

SyncML DS Client
The SyncML DS Client performs data synchronization functions that include execution of SyncML commands on the PIM applications data store, or other application specific data storeS. It is responsible for building a results status and informing the SyncML protocol engine. It encodes/decodes PIM data that is received/sent toSyncML DS server.

SyncML Engine
The SyncML Engine is responsible for SyncML generation, SyncML parsing and DTD validation in XML and WBXML formats. It also performs security operations like HMAC data integrity and credential checks. The SyncML Engine also handles base 64 encoding/decoding and notification message parsing.

Transport Layer
The Transport Layer provides specific adapters for handling different transports such as HTTP, WAP, OBEX (Bluetooth, IrDA, USB, RS 232). It handles send and receive SyncML Package data to and from the DS server. The Transport Layer receives notification buffers over WAP PUSH or OBEX.

Personal Sync Server
In addition to the jSync Client solution, Jataayu also provides a Personal Sync Server. The Personal Sync Server allows the mobile user to synchronize the data- set (Address book, Calendar, To-do/ tasks) on his handset with his desktop/ laptop computer. The Personal Sync Server needs to be installed onto a designated desktop/laptop computer.

Jataayu's Personal Sync Server successfully meets the challenge of keeping the data-set synchronised between the desktop and handset - which keeps getting modified over time between the two - in a user-friendly manner, with minimum transfer of data and needs minimal human interaction.

The Personal Sync Server integrates with Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express, available on user's desktop/laptop.

Back Up
The user can use the Back-up option to transfer the complete data-set from the handset to the Desktop at a chosen directory
